Amazonite is the green-blue variety of microcline, a potassium feldspar. The colour is unusual in that it is caused by trace lead within the crystal lattice, the only common mineral where lead substitution produces the gem colour rather than a defect or contaminant. The amount of lead is structurally bound and not bioavailable, so handling polished pieces is safe. The name is misleading: there is no significant amazonite deposit in the Amazon basin, and the geological source of the original eighteenth-century stones traded under the name remains unclear. The Russian Ural and Colorado deposits supplied much of the historical material.
In modern crystal practice amazonite is paired with the throat chakra and treated as a gentler alternative to the harder-edged blues. Where lapis carries authority and turquoise carries protection, amazonite reads more like considered honesty: the conversation you have when you need to tell the truth without bruising the other person. The piece is often suggested for negotiation, difficult family conversations, or the kind of work feedback that needs to land cleanly.
Pieces are usually sold as polished cabochons or tumbled stones, with the most prized material showing strong saturation and minimal white feldspar streaking. The hardness of six suits worn jewellery, and the colour is stable in reasonable conditions. Avoid prolonged direct sun, which can slowly lighten the green over years.
