Amethyst is the violet variety of quartz. The colour comes from trace iron and natural irradiation deep in the earth, which is why two pieces from the same mine can read very differently. One can be almost lavender, another nearly black at the tips. The name traces to the Greek amethystos, "not drunk," reflecting its old reputation as a stone of clear thinking.
In traditional crystal practice it sits with the third-eye and crown chakras. Modern users keep it close during study, journaling, and the slow turn into sleep. A quiet stone for noisy weeks.
